Supporting Our Schools

loading...The education of our youth determines the success of our future. At Community Financial, we’re proud to support every level of education across northern and southeast Michigan in the communities we serve. From scholarships to financial education, we strive to engage local schools and educate our youth in ways that will impact financial responsibility in our communities now, and in the future.

Community Shares

Started in 1999 as a small donation to celebrate our account growth, Community Shares has turned into an annual donation that helps school districts fill gaps in their educational programs. In 2013, our annual Community Shares donation provided $25,000 to expand classroom libraries, provide mathematics tools and equipment and help fulfill teacher grant requests for special educational projects. We are pleased to be able to contribute in a meaningful way to our community school districts.

Student-Run Credit Unions

It was an exciting year for this program, as we added many new schools to our list of Student-Run Credit Unions. We now host programs in 36 area elementary, middle and high schools. This program allows students from our area schools to actively participate in our credit union, in the convenience of their own school. These credit unions are run within the school by students, for their peers. The program gives our community youth comprehension in managing their finances, exposure to interviewing and experience in holding a “job” with Community Financial.

Classroom Presentations

As an additional outlet to educate our youth, Community Financial’s Education Partnership Coordinators continued to provide presentations to area classrooms about the importance of financial management in 2013. Our team members have presented to over 18,000 students on topics ranging from the importance of saving, to managing your first checking account and also establishing a credit report.

Scholarship Program

Over the years of providing scholarships to students who embody the “People Helping People” philosophy we live by at Community Financial, we’ve found ourselves receiving more applications of significantly qualified candidates. We awarded 15 students with $1,000 scholarships named in honor of past volunteer and Board Member Margaret Dunning and former General Manager George Lawton. Each year we collaborate with the Community Foundation of Plymouth (CFP) and the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation (AAACF) to award these scholarships.

"I am so grateful to Community Financial as a scholarship recipient. My scholarship was spent on books I needed for my entire freshman year of college."
Ashley Cade, 2013 scholarship recipient
