Partnering with Our Schools

loading...The success of every community begins in its schools, and we are proud to support every level of education across the area.

From financial literacy education to essay contests, we have worked to engage with local schools and students in ways that will have an impact and encourage a lifetime of financial responsibility.

PRESIDENTS’ DAY ESSAY CONTEST

In 2012, we invited elementary and middle school students to answer the question, “Which U.S. President would you like to have lunch with and why?” We were deluged with responses spanning the Presidents - from Washington to Obama.

STUDENT-RUN CREDIT UNIONS

We have continued to partner with a growing number of schools in our Student-Run Credit Union program. Through this program, students are actual members of a credit union based in the school, which is run by students. This program gives students exposure to interviewing and holding a “job,” as well as managing their finances. During 2012, over 1,800 students participated in the program, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars in their savings accounts.

CLASSROOM PRESENTIONS

loading...In addition to the Student-Run Credit Union program, our Education Partnership Coordinators provide financial education presentations to area classrooms. Covering topics from the importance of saving, to managing your first checking account or establishing a credit report; our team members helped over 17,000 students develop an understanding of making sound financial decisions.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

In 2012, Community Financial awarded scholarships to 14 students through the Community Financial Scholarship Fund. Each year, in collaboration with the Community Foundation of Plymouth (CFP) and the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation (AAACF), Community Financial awards scholarships to students who epitomize its “People Helping People” philosophy.

The scholarships awarded in 2012 are named in honor of Margaret Dunning, a 23-year volunteer on the board of directors; George Lawton, the general manager for 29 years; in addition, a scholarship was awarded to honor Phil Curtiss, who spent 12 years on the board of directors.

"Education is vital to the success of any community, and we’re proud to help these young people continue theirs."
Bill Lawton, Community Financial President/CEO
